Like Stars But Lower
We are..
… a troupe of filmmakers, scientists, and local enthusiasts inspired by the opening of the Coler Firefly Sanctuary, the first of its kind west of the Mississippi River. Can the simple magic of lightning bugs rally a community to protect wildlife even in the smallest of ways, and how profound can that be?
I’m Bucy McDonald and I’ve made documentaries in many parts of the world. This summer I returned to my childhood home of Northwest Arkansas to start a three-year project filming the fireflies and the people who live there.

Do you remember the first time you saw a firefly? We want to hear your firefly stories, big or small, it doesn’t matter. Maybe it was a summer’s night, just sitting on the porch, or maybe you were running around the backyard, catching and collecting them in jars. Or you were camping by a river, or just crossing the street. Whether it was in the long distance past, or last summer, you tell us!
Do you remember where you were in Arkansas, or how many fireflies you could see? Tell us if they were flying so low you could catch them, or high in the trees. We want to explore our memories of fireflies, and what that can tell us about today’s populations of fireflies, and whether their simple magic encourages us to protect them.
